The DOVER HARBOR is owned and operated by the Washington, D.C. Chapter of
the National Railway Historical Society, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3)
organization chartered in the District of Columbia in 1944. We operate
the car all over the country as a living example of rail travel from the
1930's, teaching people from all walks of life and all ages about the car,
railroading and its history, and the role the railroads played in building our
great nation (and still today)! Besides offering public trips and
private charters service, we participate in educational programs and
over the years have hosted boy scout troops, school groups, held public open
houses, and hosted thousands of kids (of all ages), Moms, and Dads aboard for
mini-tours. In 2006 we even donated the use of the car to a special
train that took over 100 severely wounded soldiers, sailors, and airmen from
Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Hospital to the Army vs. Navy game, for
free!
Our crew, passionate about our car and mission and dressed in period
attire, completes the experience. Stepping aboard the DOVER HARBOR is like
stepping back in time, 70 years. Being able to experience the car on the
rails or in a real station instead of looking at a static display in a
museum brings a whole new educational dimension to a passenger and
guests. Because much of the work to store, maintain and operate the car
is performed by our dedicated cadre of volunteer staff, we are able to keep
our costs low. And while we derive some revenue from trips and
charters, costs for major capital projects, restoration initiatives, and
major Amtrak inspections require the support of the public through direct
donations.
Donations to the Washington, D.C. Chapter NRHS for the future of the DOVER
HARBOR are greatly appreciated and are tax-deductible to the maximum extent
permitted by the Internal Revenue Code. Please send your
